How can I get a website without buying a domain through a webhost?
I want to get a .co.uk domain without signing up with a webhost. I figured there must be a way all the webhost sites get their .co.uk domains …. where do they get them from?
They get them from Nominet, the keeper of .UK registration names.
Although you can’t order there yourself, there are many companies (registrars) who are allowed to do so. Some of these companies (ISP, webhosts, etc) do not sell names without hosting, but many others do.
To summarise: Use the site I linked to to find a registrar that will sell you a domainname.
Note: In order to get a website running on the domain you will need DNS records set up either on your own DNS servers or somewhere else (usually on the registrars). These DNS records should point to the IP address of your server.

If you want a .co.uk it needs to be paid for no matter what, they are not free from anyone. The place that ‘they get them from’ sells them (costs money), but no you can’t just buy one. (Think of it like Frito/Lay stopping their truck at your front door so you can buy one bag of chips, doesn’t happen)
Now if you still want a .co.uk they are just $10 at http://www.newinternetdomains.com otherwise you can get a fake domain for free at http://co.cc

There are webhosts and there are domain registrars – often one company will do both, but you don’t have to buy the two separate services from the same provider. You can only get a domain through a registrar, Nominet (.co.uk domains) do not deal direct with the public.
