But, as we know, …
But, as we know, TODAY happiness depends on many other issues than doing what is right and not being lazy. There’s a huge disparity in the way people achieve happiness. Those who have to do great amount of work to even get eligible for happiness, see those who are happy, successful and important without that huge amount of efforts. It makes their own efforts look empty and useless. That’s why they don’t do them. Video games reward you immediately for doing things right, even for wasting time.
When you know with …
When you know with certainty the immediate result of your efforts, there’s no procrastination. Education doesn’t guarantee success in life or happiness. It’s a lot of effort for very uncertain end result. In a sense, there’s so much procrastination these days because of the social-economic environment. If it was a 100% certainty that education will get you financial security or happiness to the end of your life, there would be no procrastination – everyone will be hurrying to get education.
Nice take on the …
Nice take on the issue of procrastination, but I want to suggest something else. Most people procrastinate because they feel they will not get the desired results. They feel their education will just end in some boring job. In essence – the effort involved doesn’t return the desired amount of happiness. Let’s say you find a map of hidden treasure, (say 1 million unmarked dollars). You would not procrastinate to go and dig it up. In fact you wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about doing it

1. According to your discourse, parents always act as slave-masters. False. What happens when experience (usually them) told you what to do, you don’t do it, then you realize if I had done it, my life would have been different. Let’s not confuse discipline with terror –two semantically different words.
2. In nature there are laws, what about breaking them? trial and error kind of way of discovering? Where do you get this idea of doing what always you want to do?
I enjoyed your talk

This is an absolutely fantastic insight on a problem that I’ve been trying to solve for years. And it makes perfect sense! For me studying isn’t a terrible activity. Hell, I sometimes spend hours on Wikipedia reading up on the most random subjects. But anytime it’s something that relates to school, I can’t wait until I can get away from it. Thank you for these amazing words of wisdom.
There are several …
There are several reasons why people suffer from procrastination. Demand resistance is only one of them. I suppose it is good advice if you fall into that category, but people who procrastinate, because of let’s say fear of failure for example, will not benefit from that advice.
Excellent analysis! …
Excellent analysis! It may be well to note how the “slave” figure will only display passive aggression, or any kind of aggression for that matter, if they esteem themselves high enough to properly resent the situation. Another example of how those relationships are most painful and damaging for the MOST virtuous.
