Is it okay to change hosts but keep the domain name if it was free with package?

There are a lot of sites now that offer a free domain name if you pay for a hosting package with them. I’m just wondering if I was to change hosts later on, would it still be possible to keep that domain name or would it belong to the web host company? Or should I just register a domain name with someone like GoDaddy and web hosting with someone else?

You would probably lose the domain name since it is part of the package you have paid on the hosting company. Yes, you can definitely register a domain name with GoDaddy and web hosting with someone else. To help you decide for the domain name try to look at this site http://www.domainnamesregistration.org/ and for the best web hosting site that suits for your needs and budget try http://www.cheapwebhosts.org/

Hope it helps.

  1. The domain name comes free with the package you’ve paid for, if you change hosts or perhaps services you could lose the name.

Talk to the host before changing, that way you can figure something out because the domain name is yours you just wouldn’t be registered through them anymore so you’ll need to register it through another company.

    Good luck.

  2. If the domain is your… of course ! All you need is set the new DNS to the new host !
( remember that a domain cost only $12 $15 … that is why lots of hosting give it for free ! )

  3. I would ask the company directly as it could vary from website to website. If this domain is important to you, you must ensure that you ‘own’ the domain and it is portable.

If you listed the web hosts name we could provide more detailed assistance but the best course of action is to ask them directly. If they do not offer live chat or phone support where you can ask them a question within about 5 minutes I would not use them for anything anyways.

  4. Read your licensing agreement or contract with the hosting company. It’s almost certain to be spelled out there.

Also note that if the domain name contains the hosting company’s domain name, you can’t transport it anyplace else. In other words, if I had a domain name with Yahoo that was, say, Phlebob.yahoo.com, I couldn’t take it anyplace not only because of legal ramifications (I can’t use yahoo.com without permission), but also because of Web limitations. xxx.yahoo.com will always point to yahoo. It will never point anyplace else.

    Hope that helps.

  5. i think those companies wouldnt allow that, since giving free domain name at the first instance is a marketting strategy. the best and the most economical way i would suggest is you have ur domain name and hosting at the same place. for instance i have my site registered and freely hosted with http://www.xnynz.com/

  6. Hi,

1- Buy your domain name from godaddy, and buy your hosting package from BH.

2- Don’t purchase your hosting plan from godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com

3- As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

  10. Should you take advantage of free domain name offers? Buyer beware. Some are free for the life of your hosting account and others are only free for the first year. In either case, if you cancel your account or the name comes up for renewal, you’ll have to pay a fee that’s 2-3 times the going rate. If you accept the free domain offer, you will not own the name, the web host will. You will also have to pay extra for privacy protection. My best advice is to not let a free domain name offer become a deciding point in selecting a plan. Instead, register your names at a registrar where you’ll have complete control of all settings, including privacy protection for your personal information.

Also, I do not recommend goDaddy for domain names. There are much better options out there. Use NameCheap instead. I’ve been using them for years. I used to use goDaddy, but since changing to NameCheap, my total spending is about 50% less. Here’s an article discussing NameCheap vs. goDaddy

  11. domain name is your if you want to change the host find but you have to redirect DNS to the new webhost which they need to provide you the info to redirect you domain to the new host. Also you have to pay seperately for domain fee. I think you’d better check for the cost.
