What are dedicated servers?

I own a ps3 and i hear alot of talk on games like mw2 about dedicated servers but i have no clue what they so can someone explain in detail please thanks.

A DEDICATED SERVER is a server with a specific role. e.g. a dedicated file server would purley allow all computers that can comunicate with each other to acess, store and retrive files from the server. a server is a centrelized communcation station.

so for the matchmaking server ( mw2 sever) there HUGE!!!!! server would carry out the tasks of running & ORGANISING online games e.g. putting millions of players in different games in diffrenet times. when you join a game you send a request to the server saying " I want to play free for all!" and the server picks up up and drops you in a lobby for of free for all players but it does this for millions at a time for all different games.

it requires some seroius powerful processing and thats why sometimes people have connection time outs due to the amount of stress being put on the sever!

  1. They are servers that are dedicated to one function. Some servers might be hosting websites, streaming media, serving files, etc, so a dedicated server is going to ususally be more reliable since it uses all of it resources for one task only.
