What are dedicated servers in a game?
What are dedicated servers and what do they do?
It’s a machine that is running the multiplayer game ‘engine’ but without any graphics or user interface to it.
It’s basically working as a data sharing system to transfer all the actual players positions and weapons aiming/firing info to each other, so each player can appear to interact with the other players.
It also keeps track of scores / frags / points or whatever for the game.
Because the graphics are generally the most processor-intensive part of the game, one machine can run the server versions of several games and still do other things.
They are computers who only have the one sole purpose of "serving" (running) the game.
