what are dedicated servers and are they free?

Hello..

well.. I have bought a few games that run on steam

and on the ‘tools’ bar there is a list of games..

one of them is "left 4 dead 2 dedicated server"

what does it mean? If i’ll downloand this free game – it will work – for free –

please explain..

thanks,

Jake

It means, in your case, the server that is used host L4D2 games are is doing just that; devoting all available resources for the game.

  1. A dedicated server is a computer whose sole task is to perform the duty it is "dedicated" to, in this case running Left for Dead.

  3. Okay.
In this case a "dedicated server" means the software engine is running in the background with no interface for the terminal user. In gaming this is used to "host" a game. You run the dedicated server, and that means the game is running, then you have to connect to the running server in order to play.
Server in this case is not a physical mnachine it is a process, and "dedicated" just means that the server is only serving and has no pre-established client interface…
