Should I build/purchase a server or should I pay for dedicated?

Hi, I am trying to launch several websites and expecting total few hundreds thousand people visit the webs at the same time.

I found out that a good dedicated hosting quite expensive. (I am student).

So I am wonder if would it be cheaper in long run if I build one myself? How do I know how much bandwidth is available and need? Also is there any specific tutorial on self build server.

Thanks in advance!

It depends what you want to do. if you do a dedicated hosting you lose control over the website meaning if the server goes down your on that businesses mercy on getting it back online as soon as possible. Building a server is the same as building a desktop nothing new just expensive equipment and also maybe hardware gear more towards hosting needs meaning you can add more hard drives then a desktop.

If your hosting your stuff yourself here is what it might cost you server complete system about $2,000 usd for latest server hardwares like 4 cpus or 2 cpus of AMD 6-core cpus.

then you need about 2mbs of upload on your internet line. The upload 2mbs should be increase when you get more traffic or you are expecting a high volume of people. the more you raise that the more expensive it gets for your internet line. Plus you need a static ip address not expensive just a extra $5 usd. Also don’t forget a external or networked hard drive to backup your server.

There are no tutorials on how to build a server. Most people directly buy from whole sellers and ask them to either have it assembled or your can have them give you a liste of what parts and cases you can have with the server motherboard you want.

You also may want a UPS system which is a device that has a 1 hour battery supply that got is to swtich from main power to backup power just in case your power goes out for some reason. these are usally around 300 to 500 usd.

I would suggest to build your own server only if you have the money and time to spend doing research on server part prices and installing the server software . In the long run you have more control what you have on the server. Like for instant you might want to code your website in php some hosting providers won’t have this on their servers and won’t allow you to install it.

So doing it by yourself allows you to be boss on what is installed on the server at no restriction. This may be a pricey route but it allows you to run professional websites and you can advertise ads your own way and make money off it. The only think about this is that you better be sure you can make money off the server one way or another otherwise you can easily be low on money with this route.

It boils down on how much money you have and how much time and energy your willing to put into it.

if you go the hosting route you will be restricted causing your websites to be less professional in certain ways.

Hope this helps.

  1. It depends on you. Building a server is similar to building a desktop except the parts you install have to be top-notch quality and reliable since they’ll be running 24×7. Do you have the time to do research, build it yourself, and stress test it before going into production? You should start with 100Mbps (maybe 10Mbps even) and slowly increase according to your needs. With a dedicated server you don’t need to worry about the hardware. Have you considered virtual private servers? In these setups, you get a "slice" of the server running virtualization.
